St James On The Lines
Garrison Church | Designated in 1981
This Anglican Church was constructed on the “lines of communication” between the Town and the Establishments in 1836, the intention being to serve as a garrison church and also for the growing civilian population. The registers and surrounding tombstones record many of our early settlers. The interior has an unusual aisle, built wide enough to allow the soldiers to march in four abreast. Simple yet attractive, this church has been restored to its original state, with wooden shingles, clapboard siding and handmade iron decoration.
